A couple of weeks ago, Courtney and I had the pleasure of capturing Georgina and Ted’s wedding at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall in York. As photographers, we love venues that offer something unique, and this one delivered in every way (except for parking – but hey, nothing good comes easy, right?).
Stepping Into History
The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is one of York’s most remarkable historic buildings, dating back to the 14th century. Originally built as a meeting place for influential merchants, it has stood the test of time and now serves as an enchanting wedding venue filled with charm, character, and centuries of history.
Walking through its doors feels like stepping back in time. The Great Hall, where most ceremonies and receptions take place, is lined with medieval beams and grand windows, creating an atmosphere that’s both awe-inspiring and intimate. The slightly slanted wooden floorboards may not be straight anymore, but that just adds to the venue’s warmth and authenticity. Every detail of this space tells a story, making it a dream setting for couples who love history and timeless beauty.
A Hidden Oasis in the City
Despite being in the heart of York, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall feels almost tucked away from the hustle and bustle. It’s hidden behind a row of shops, accessible through an enchanting little tunnel, making it feel like a secret waiting to be discovered. Once inside, the venue opens up into a peaceful, picturesque courtyard – perfect for some quick portraits or a quiet moment away from the celebration.
What makes this venue even more special is its proximity to York’s incredible cityscape. After capturing some moments in the courtyard, we took a short walk to make the most of York’s historic streets, charming alleyways, and stunning architecture. If you’re getting married here, taking the opportunity to explore the surrounding area for photos is a must.
Why We Love It
Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is a venue that oozes character. From its medieval charm to its central-yet-secluded location, it offers something truly special for couples who want a wedding with history, atmosphere, and a touch of magic. Whether you’re drawn to its rich heritage, unique aesthetic, or its blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, this venue is an unforgettable backdrop for your big day.
If you’re planning a York city wedding and want a venue that’s as full of personality as your love story, the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is well worth considering!
